Google says “no” to sexy

Is it 2010? Because it feels like 2010. What with arbitrary app approvals, app purges, and moral responsibilities and such.

Just before the weekend, Google sent out a notice via email and G+ to inform developers of updates to the Google Play Developer Program Policies. The general theme of the update is a notable crack down on deceptive ads and practices. However, inching closer and closer to Apple-esque territory with each policy update, Google also revised its stance on adult content, stating:

Sexually Explicit Material: Apps that contain or promote pornography are prohibited; this includes sexually explicit or erotic content, icons, titles, or descriptions. Google has a zero-tolerance policy against child sexual abuse imagery. If we become aware of content with child sexual abuse imagery, we will report it to the appropriate authorities and delete the Google Accounts of those involved with the distribution.

…because apparently you can’t simply say “we don’t want porn” without following it with a hyperbolic association.

Seriously? That’s like saying Due to allergies, cats are not permitted in our house. Anyone caught skinning a 3 day old Bengal tiger cub alive will be reported to the authorities.

Developers have 15 days to comply with the new policy, else see their apps removed from Play. While we’re disheartened to see Google further villianize legal content and the adults who create and consume it, we appreciate their efforts to be clearer with developers as to the content allowed in their marketplace. At the end of the day, it’s Google’s app store and they can stock their shelves as they please. We just hope that Google chooses to enforce these new rules consistently, without awarding big brands preferential treatment over the same type of content. We’ve seen it happen before elsewhere, and it isn’t fair to put developers on such precarious ground.

Displaced by Google?

MiKandi was built on the belief that adults should be treated like adults. That means enabling them to download and purchase the legal content they desire on the devices they own. It also means providing developers a safe environment to share their adult applications with our 4.5 million customers worldwide. We may be a small app store, but we’re proud that we treat our developers and customers fairly and equally. Any developer affected by this update are encouraged to join the MiKandi Adult App Store. We look forward to working with any developer displaced by Google.

MiKandi Releases First Ever Google Glass Porn

When Glass was announced last year at Google i/O, the first thing that crossed everyone’s mind was Google Glass Porn. Sadly, last month, Google banned sexually explicit material on Glass at the same time we released the device’s first porn app, Tits & Glass. We’ve since revised the app to remain compliant with their new terms.

Then we realized something. While the tech giant has restricted sexually explicit material in Glass apps, or Glassware, there is no current restriction on the sort of content created with the innovative device. And when we picked up our device late May, they even encouraged us to let folks play with it in Demo mode. It just so happens the folks we know get naked a lot, soo….

get pornstar code

Well, self.getPornstar().install(self.getGlass()), we have. MiKandi has collaborated with leading adult entertainment media organization, XBIZ, to release the first Google Glass porn. The video features porn superstar James Deen, and 2011 XBIZ Female Performer of the Year, Andy San Dimas, each donning a device to record the first-ever, two-way POV Glass porn. What better way to put the device through the ultimate test than with two of the biggest stars in the adult entertainment industry, right?

Andy San Dimas and James DeenShooting the first porn video for Glass was exciting, yet challenging. We discovered technical limitations with the device that makes shooting POV videos in general, but porn in particular, cumbersome. Ms. San Dimas put it well when she pointed out that trying to get a sexy shot while looking sexy while having sex is not the easiest task. But what makes up for these challenges are the personal and intimate shots created by James and Andy. We found the best footage came when they were completely unscripted and just having fun.

In addition to the adult video is a censored comedy sketch. The sketch follows the performers as they uncover some pretty powerful hidden capabilities of Google Glass. The video ends with a cameo from none other than porn legend, Ron Jeremy.

with James Deen and Andy San DimasThe censored comedy sketch is available to view on MiKandi’s YouTube channel, http://youtube.com/mikandistore. The uncensored, 18-and-over version will available later today to view for free at http://mikandi.com/google-glass-porn.

Behind the Scenes of the First-Ever Google Glass Porn

In addition, XBIZ hosts five annual trade events including the industry’s top awards event of the year, the annual XBIZ Awards show. XBIZ is frequently cited in the media for coverage of the multi-billion dollar adult entertainment industry and has been published in CNN, Fox News, Newsweek, MSNBC, Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, Wired, CNET, ABC, USA Today and Los Angeles Times among others.

12 Million Tumblr Adult Blogs Unsearchable

12 million reasons you’ll get blue balls

UPDATE: Tumblr released this statement to clarify the service changes. For now, our hope is *sort of* restored.

Earlier this year, we wrote this post with tips for budding developers on creating free websites for their adult apps. In it, we recommended Tumblr, the once adult-friendly blogging platform. Note, “once adult-friendly.”

When the news of Yahoo’s purchase of Tumblr was announced, users expressed valid concerns as to the future of the blogging service they’d come to love. Promising to leave the blogs that were not “brand safe” (namely, the 12 million porn blogs) alone, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer’s comments hinted to a shift towards sex positivity, or at least acceptance, in the corporate tech world. At MiKandi, we optimistically saw this as the first, much needed step from tech giants towards treating adults like adults and giving users the choice and ability to access safe adult content without judgment.

We’re sad to say that was short-lived.

Today, we learned from Violet Blue at ZDNet that Yahoo-owned Tumblr has updated its service to render adult blogs virtually invisible. This is just days after Tumblr founder David Karp told Stephen Colbert that Tumblr had no desire to police sexual content.

David Karp:

We’ve taken a pretty hard line on freedom of speech, supporting our users’ creation, whatever that looks like, and it’s just not something we want to police … I don’t want have to go in there to draw the line between this photo and this behind-the-scenes photo of Lady Gaga and, like, her nip.

From ZDNet:

Under Tumblr’s new rules, adult-rated blogs and their posts will no longer show up in tags, period. Tags are the way blogs are searched, and found, on Tumblr.

The only way to find a post from a blog marked adult – or to find and discover adult blogs – is to receive the link directly, such as if another user reblogs a post, you are already following the blog, or you are sent a direct link.

According to Tumblr’s updated FAQ, while adult-oriented blogs are still allowed, the company has “to be sensitive to the millions of readers and bloggers from different locations, cultures, and backgrounds with different points of view concerning mature or adult-oriented content.”

There were already features to block porn from appearing on your feed in Tumblr, so we don’t understand the need to render nearly 10% of their blogs unsearchable.

The Internet reacts to Google Glass porn ban

After spending the last few days on the phone with Google developer support representatives, we’re sad to say we’re no further along on our quest for clear and complete answers from Google than we were on Monday. Our strangest call was the latest, in which they positively asserted that we did and did not have a ban on API access and that there was no way to re-enable a project once it had been banned and that they would look into it. Wait….. what?

wait.. what?

The other night, we discovered that OAuth2 API access had been disabled on our website, TitsAndGlass.com. We triple-checked Google’s Authentication API terms yesterday and again this morning, and, just as we thought, we’re compliant. Hopefully, this too gets cleared up soon. Then again, we have been burned before.

The Internet’s reaction to Google’s ban on Glass porn apps has been the stuff of legends. If there’s one thing we’ve learned in our years online, it’s this- do not get between the people and their porn. Or perhaps more accurately, do not play the people’s Mommy or Daddy. Unless they’re into it.

We’ve gathered some of our favorite reactions around the web to the Google Glass porn ban. We hope they make you LOL as hard as they made us. Fappy Friday!

Link Love: Moving Porn Forward

Over the past few decades, the adult industry has made significant transitions and contributions in and to the world we live in. You may laugh, but many technologies we use today were driven by the industry- from VHS and DVDs, to online payment systems (maybe this time next year, we can add Bitcoin to the list). Some changes were positive- moving from brick and mortar adult video stores to online adult networks and affiliate programs. Other changes were unwelcome- such as torrents and tube sites. Yet, while the world the adult industry operates in has undergone tremendous change, for the most part the actual product remains unsettling stagnant.

Related: Whatever happened to porn leading the tech industry?

If you’ve watched your fair share of adult entertainment, you probably know the adult film MO like the palm of your hand- see what I did there? You could recite a random film scene by scene and describe a majority of the adult films out there because they haven’t changed all that much.

Last week, one of our favorite porn blogs, porn.com/blog (obviously NSFW) shared this fantastic post detailing what they think porn can do to move forward. Some highlights:

On racism and the interracial niche

Apart from sending a horrible message that black performers are somehow “second-class” to their white counterparts, this practice broadcasts the notion to the younger generation that there is something inherently taboo about fucking somebody of a different ethnicity.

On porn for women

Females aren’t sexless, fragile creatures – no, they’ve got horny needs and desires too, so naturally catering to the other fifty percent of the population would not only be progressive but lucrative as well.

On transparency

Since the dawn of tube sites, porn will do just about anything to get a paid subscriber. There are a litany of ways to seduce someone into a membership, but imagine if porn came clean with its ways, scrubbed its image, and created female-friendly porn among other progressive changes. Slowly, but surely, the mainstream would be more accommodating in letting its red-headed stepchild sit at the table instead of hiding it under the stairs.

Transparency is something we’re particularly keen on. When we come across porn companies that try to trick customers, we can’t help but shake our heads in frustration. You’re ruining it for the rest of us! Customers shouldn’t have to worry about getting scammed by the people they’re trying to give their money to. We think that’s ridiculous. So, since day one, MiKandi has strived for transparency. We’re committed to giving you very best mobile porn experience. We do that not only by building innovative mobile products like our adult app store and streaming mobile theater, but by treating our customers with respect. We’re happy to see more transparent, ethical, and accessible next-generation adult companies emerge. Together, we’ll redefine what it means to be an adult company.

How is Apple tackling user generated content?

iphonenoporn

Today, Market Watch published an article regarding apps that display user generated content and Apple’s still seemingly arbitrary app approval process. It’s like 2010 all over again! We can’t believe that, in 2013, developers still have questions that Apple doesn’t want to answer.

Same old, same old

Back in 2010, Apple infamously purged the Apple App Store of all “adult” apps. While it was pretty obvious to developers and customers that porn apps are not welcomed in the app store, no one expected Apple to lay down the ban hammer on bikini apps, CGI jiggling censored boob apps, and fart apps. Were the apps immature? Arguably. Adult? No way.

Link: Geekwire asks MiKandi Is the iBoobs app even porn?

Although we and many others felt Apple took it too far, we did appreciate that the company was finally making it a littler clearer about what kind of apps were allowed in their market. We invited developers to join MiKandi, the world’s first and largest app store for adults, and welcomed thousands of adult apps with open arms.

Tackling user generated content

This time around, it’s user generated content that’s rubbing the app store the wrong way. Earlier this year, Twitter’s video app, Vine, fell under fire when users began uploading short pornographic clips. As a result the app was slapped with a 17+ rating. Image sharing app, 500px, was initially banned from the Apple App Store before receiving a 17+ rating, and the Tumblr app, although not banned, also sports a 17+ rating. In all cases, Apple deemed it was simply too easy for users to upload and find adult content. To that end, Safari should get its own 17+ rating as well. It is quite possibly the easiest way to find porn on the iPhone. Well, save for a certain MiKandi Theater (accessible on iPhone and iPads!). But Apple show favoritism? Say it ain’t so!

What’s a developer to do?

If your app has user-generated content, what are your options? Unfortunately, when it comes to iPhone apps, we don’t have an answer. Everyone looks forward to Apple setting clearer guidelines around the apps they will accept and reject. Until then, developers who have been affected by Apple’s arbitrary policies are more than welcome to share their sexy apps in our market.  Register your free MiKandi Developer account today.

MiKandi on 3.8 Million Devices

mikandi

We’re happy to announce today that MiKandi, the world’s leading adult app store and mobile streaming subscription service for adult entertainment, is now installed on 3.8 million devices worldwide, with 1 million registered customers.

Launched late 2009, our first-of-its-kind app store was met with tremendous support from Android users and developers who needed an adult-friendly app store to distribute their applications. In less than one week, MiKandi was downloaded over 80,000 times. That number jumped to 2 million by the beginning of 2012 with the launch of MiKandi Theater, the subscription-based mobile streaming service of adult content. By July of that year, we launched the HTML5 version of MiKandi Theater for all smartphones and tablets, including iPad, iPhone, and Windows Phone. MiKandi Theater is currently available worldwide to any adult with a connected mobile device.

The fact that we grew to this size organically, without any advertising dollars, is especially inspiring for us. It goes to show what happens when you focus on offering great customer service and treating adults like adults. We’re thankful to all of our customers and fans who’ve supported us over the past three years.

Android users can download MiKandi for free at http://mikandi.com, no registration required, and browse the adult app store’s catalog of thousands of applications. Alternatively, non-Android users can access MiKandi Theater, dubbed the “Netflix for porn”, on their smartphone or tablet by visiting http://mikandi.com/theater. All new customers enjoy a free 7 day trial with no registration or credit card required.
